With an investment budget of £250,000, Medway Council aimed to transform Wigmore Library from a traditional library into a vibrant communityhub. Feasibility studies conducted by Playle & Partners LLP assessed three potential options for refurbishment.

Option 1: Basic Refurbishment
– Relocate the IT area to the main library zone.
– Create two new meeting rooms with a bi-fold partition for flexible use.
– Enable room rentals for external clients and the public, generating additional income.
– Move the reception area.
– Reconfigure back-of-house spaces to provide public access to the DDA WC

Option 2: Enhanced Refurbishment
Includes all elements from Option 1, plus:
– A covered entrance/enclosed porch.
– Improved car parking, including potential electric vehicle charging points and dedicated spaces.
– A more visible entrance from the street.
– A potential wooded play area at the front of the site.

Option 3: Comprehensive Expansion
Incorporates all features from Options 1 and 2, along with:
– A building extension.
– A reconfigured layout for better accessibility.
– A DDA WC accessible from the main library area.
– A Changing Places WC (similar to Rochester Community Hub).
– Dedicated buggy storage.
– A public tea/coffee station.

Upon deliberation with the client and key stakeholders’ option 1 was chosen and the detailed design stage progressed, working alongside the appointed contractor to bring the project to site at the start of 2019. Following completion the site held a formal opening ceremony to the delight of not only the client but the wider local community.
