Playle and Partners LLP were appointed as Quantity Surveyors and Employers Agent on the creation of a new high quality 2FE primary school with integrated early year’s provision including associated external work to play and games areas including a new multi-use Games Area in Hailsham, East Sussex.

The Primary School is to be on live with current building bulletin BBI 0J and current design standards, schedule of accommodations. The project delivered: a PAN of 60 and capacity for 420 children aged 4-11. As part of the new school, there is to be an integrated nursery for early years learning provision for 40 two, three and four year olds.

A panelised modular system was applied during the early stage of the build process, which has allowed the structural panels to be delivered to the site with external windows, doors and glazing pre-installed. This specific modular system has ensured a shorter timescale of delivery and a smaller volume of deliveries to the construction site to date.

High Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) performance and providing all those working on-site with a work environment less like a ‘construction site’ and more like a permanent place of work was another key focus of the team. The project was completed with zero RIDDOR incidents, zero ‘near misses’, zero ‘dangerous occurrences’ and zero ‘service strikes. The site facilities were of a high standard with a score of 44 from the Considerate Constructors Scheme.  

Special considerations have been given to the management of potential flooding and ecology at the site.


Highlights

  • Project Completed 11 weeks ahead of schedule in a total of 44 weeks, with the initial phase handed over 6 weeks early, meaning pupils could start the new term in the brand-new school rather than the temporary accommodation planned.
  • Excellent levels of collaboration and teamwork demonstrated throughout the project and with all parties, including supply chain, client, end-user, and all stakeholders.
  • Project saved 145t CO & reduced waste created by 39% using MMC and other site-specific schemes.
