The challenge set across three days, involves cycling 225 miles in total in and around Milan. They will pedal around 7 of the Italian Lakes, including Lake Maggiore and Lake Como! If they have any energy left, there is also the opportunity to climb the famous Madonna climb (as often featured in the famous Italian cycle event, the Giro di Lombardia)!
Charlie’s Cycling Career
Charlie has only recently found his love for cycling; “I have not ridden a bicycle on the road for over 15 years and I have only just bought a new bicycle to train for this challenge! The challenge will be difficult for me and I will have to give it my all to cycle the 75-80 miles a day. I hope to also climb the Madonna del Ghisallo on the final day of the challenge. In preparation for the challenge, I have joined Nuffield Gym in Chislehurst and I am doing 4 Spin/RPM classes a week, as well as my usual weekly swimming routine and Body Pump class. I also intend to join Sidcup Cycle Club to get out on the road with my new bike! I recently did a 3 hour charity Spinathon at Sidcup Leisure centre with Samantha Howell of Playle’s Marketing Team. Completion of this further fuelled my passion for cycling.”
Daniel’s Cycling Career
Daniel has been cycling for several years and enjoys rides out into the countryside at weekends. Daniel has completed several cycling trips in the UK and across Europe. Daniel says; “I’m really looking forward to a new challenge that a difficult route in the alps will bring. Most of my trips have so far been reasonably flat ones in Holland or Belgium! I best start practising some hill climbs.”
To raise funds for this event, Charlie and Daniel will be running smaller events through-out the year. They would be grateful for your support with these and any donation will be very much appreciated.

Charity Football Match – Anticipated August 2019
Further information to follow
The organisation carries the name of Demelza Phillips, daughter of Derek and Jennifer Phillips, who died tragically from a brain tumour at the age of 24. Demelza had worked at Acorns Children’s Hospice in Birmingham and was inspired by their work. This inspiration was passed on to her parents who had the vision to establish a children’s hospice in the South-East of England.
Working with a small group of founding supporters, in 1994 Derek and Jennifer set up a charity that campaigned tirelessly across the areas where we are now so well established. This attracted tens, then hundreds, and then thousands of supporters. Finally, in 1998 our Patron the Countess of Burma opened the hospice in Sittingbourne, Kent. The building was designed by Derek himself as an architect and is a remarkable bringing together of beauty, serenity, and practicality.
Sadly, Jennifer Phillips died unexpectedly in August 2001 aged 61. She is remembered in our Garden of Tranquillity, along with many of the children and young people who have used the hospice.
Demelza entered its next phase of development in 2004. We merged with James House, a charity established in East Sussex by Robin and Mary Gooch following the death of their 11-year-old son James. This enabled us to provide therapies, respite and end-of-life care in the comfort and security of a child’s own home. And to put the final piece of the founding vision into place, in 2009 Demelza was able to build and open a hospice in Eltham, to serve the boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark. Our South-East London hospice is an oasis of peace, fun, opportunity and rest for young Londoners and their families in need of our help and support.
The leaflet, Demelza’s smile, written in the early days of our organisation, describes how the vision of Derek and Jennifer, inspired by the life of their daughter, became a reality.
Demelza SEL (South East London)

Situated in the heart of South East London, our Eltham hospice has excellent transport links into the Capital and is surrounded by local amenities and beautiful parks. With many leisure facilities and activities, Demelza SEL is the perfect retreat, whether for day or short-term respite residential care.
Each child who visits Demelza SEL has access to their own bedroom, with a specialist bed or cot and ensuite bathroom. The hospice also has specially adapted bedrooms, designed to enable an enhanced level of independence for young people staying with us. Parents and siblings are welcome to stay in our family accommodation, complete with kitchenette, ensuite bathroom and lounge.
Demelza kitchen staff pride themselves in providing delicious food to cater for all different tastes and specialist diets including vegetarian and halal.
Children, young people and their families staying at Demelza SEL also have access to networked computers, fitted with special needs equipment such as touch screens and adjustable tables. All the computers have parental control software installed.
In 2017 corporate supporter Osborne Construction worked tirelessly over 14 days to transform Demelza SEL as part of its Space to Grow building project.
